Compassionate Care for Every Child at Kabarole Hospital C.O.U

For a parent, nothing is more important than the health and well-being of their child. When illness strikes, you need a Paediatrics hospital that combines clinical expertise with a gentle, family-centered approach. Kabarole Hospital C.O.U has been the trusted home for child healthcare in Fort Portal City and the surrounding Tooro region since 1903.

As Uganda’s second-oldest missionary hospital, we don’t just treat symptoms; we care for the “whole person” spirit, body, and soul. Our Paediatrics Department is dedicated to ensuring that every child, from the most vulnerable newborn to the growing adolescent, has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

What is Paediatrics and Why is Specialized Care Essential?

Paediatrics is the branch of medicine focused on the physical, emotional, and social health of infants, children, and adolescents. Children are not just “small adults”; their bodies are developing rapidly, and they require specialized medical attention from trained paediatricians and nurses who understand their unique physiological and psychological needs.

Specialized child healthcare is essential for:

  • Early Intervention: Detecting developmental delays or chronic conditions early when they are most treatable.
  • Preventative Medicine: Utilizing life-saving immunizations to prevent once-common childhood killers.
  • Nutrition Management: Addressing stunting and malnutrition, which are critical health burdens in Western Uganda.

Comprehensive Paediatric Services at Kabarole Hospital

At Kabarole Hospital, we provide a wide range of services designed to address both acute illnesses and long-term health monitoring. Our Private Not For Profit (PNFP) model ensures that these essential services remain accessible to the “disadvantaged and less privileged” in our community.

1. Immunization and Growth Monitoring

Our “Young Child Clinic” (YCC) is the first line of defense for your child’s health. We follow the Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunization (UNEPI) guidelines to provide free vaccinations against diseases such as polio, tuberculosis (BCG), measles, and hepatitis B. We also conduct routine growth monitoring to track height and weight, ensuring every child is meeting their developmental milestones.

2. Acute Illness Management (Malaria, Respiratory, and Diarrhoea)

Malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoeal diseases remain the leading causes of childhood morbidity in our region. Our clinical team is expert in the “Integrated Management of Childhood Illness” (IMCI) protocol, ensuring rapid diagnosis and treatment. We provide:

  • Malaria Control: Both in-hospital treatment and community outreach programs to distribute mosquito nets and education.
  • Respiratory Care: Specialized treatment for pneumonia and asthma using modern nebulizers and oxygen support.
  • Hydration Therapy: Managing severe dehydration caused by gastrointestinal infections.

3. Specialized HIV and TB Care for Children

In partnership with the Uganda Protestant Medical Services Bureau (UPMB) and through our planned IMPACT Center, we offer high-quality HIV prevention, care, and treatment services for children and adolescents. Our focus is on achieving viral load suppression and providing family-centered care that includes social support and nutrition counseling for orphans and vulnerable children.

4. Nutrition Screening and Support

Nutrition is the foundation of growth. Our department conducts nutrition screening for thousands of children annually. We actively support over 25 “mother-to-mother” support groups to promote exclusive breastfeeding and provide therapeutic foods to children suffering from stunting or wasting.

5. School Health Programs

Our commitment to children extends beyond the hospital walls. KCH regularly conducts school health outreaches, providing immunizations, health education, and screenings for common conditions directly to students in the Fort Portal area.

Advanced Neonatal Facilities and Surgical Care

We understand that the first days of life are the most critical. Kabarole Hospital has recently seen significant upgrades to its infrastructure to better serve our smallest patients.

Paediatric Surgical Excellence

When a child requires surgery, they need a team that understands the delicacy of the procedure. We provide “Primary surgery in trauma” for accidents and fractures, along with corrective surgeries for congenital conditions. Together with our stakeholders, we ensures that we have the capacity to manage complex paediatric cases within Fort Portal, saving families the cost of traveling to Kampala.

Why Choose Kabarole Hospital for Your Child?

Parents in the Tooro region have trusted Kabarole Hospital for generations for several key reasons:

  • A Proven Track Record: Our quality improvement initiatives led to a 75% reduction in maternal mortality, a success that directly translates to safer births and healthier outcomes for newborns.
  • Holistic Healing: Our Chaplaincy department works hand-in-hand with our medical team to provide emotional and spiritual comfort to both children and their parents during difficult times.
  • Strategic Partnerships: By collaborating with USAID, LifeNet International, and Jamie’s Fund, we ensure our staff are trained in the latest clinical best practices for mental health and emergency care.
  • Affordable and Compassionate: As a faith-based PNFP hospital, we work with government NGO grants to keep our costs manageable while maintaining a high standard of professional care.
